About This Course

Language development underpins children’s academic progress and allows them to thrive in a social environment, building a strong foundation for better life outcomes. Practitioners must have the right skills to promptly recognise communication and language difficulties, plan appropriate strategies and review the impact of practice on children's progress.

During the course, participants will:

  • Explore the development of communication with a particular focus on expressive and receptive language skills, joint attention, and social referencing
  • Look at assessment tools to pinpoint children's specific difficulties 
  • Consider multicultural elements which may impact on the development of communication
  • Explore the development of multilingualism in children with communication and language needs
  • Look at a range of practical strategies to promote expressive and receptive language needs 
  • Write a support plan

This 6 modules course is suitable for all practitioners in Early Years and KS1

Carla Cornelius is a Special Educational Needs Consultant and Trainer who has worked in early years education for the past 17 years, supporting settings to embrace the principles of inclusive practice.

Her courses reflect her experience of Special Educational Needs, studies of Child Development, and years spent working across a multitude of settings.

She has been a Practitioner, Manager, Mentor, Assessor, Tutor, and Local Authority Advisor, working across the private, voluntary, and public sectors.
